Full-Time IEP Instructor Job Description

CSE Summary:

Colorado School of English is a private language school located in downtown Denver.  We have an open enrollment program and we encourage students to advance through the program at their own pace.  We follow a communicative approach to language learning with student-centered classrooms.  This approach affects teaching methods and techniques used in the classroom and impacts learning objectives, selection of materials, and student assessment. 

We have 3 core classes in our IEP (integrated grammar, reading & writing, speaking & listening) offered in 7 levels in our academic program.  Additionally, we offer test preparation classes (TOEFL, IELTS). Sessions are 12 weeks long.

Teaching responsibilities:

·         Teach a minimum of 3 classes a day, four days (20 classroom hours) per week between the hours of 8am and 6pm

·         Able to teach all levels (zero beginner to advanced ) of the core IEP program (grammar, reading & writing, speaking & listening)

·         Assess students’ progress, tracking to learning outcomes, on a weekly basis

·         Create weekly assessments and the rubrics used to grade those

·         Grade tests, quizzes, oral presentations, essays, etc.

·         Diagnose students’ placement in a level (during their first week in that level) and adjust their placement as necessary

·         Write lesson plans that map to the level guides and curriculum

·         Select course materials (from an approved list)

·         Grade school-wide writing tests

·         Develop class and course curriculum

 

Non-teaching responsibilities:

·         Attend mandatory weekly staff meetings

·         Complete student progress reports on an ongoing basis

·         Evaluate and update level guides (each session) to align with curriculum and student learning outcomes

·         Evaluate and update student learning outcomes

·         Conference with students at mid-session to discuss their progress in the subject area

·         Keep academic records up-to-date (progress sheets, progress reports, lesson plans, student grades, etc.)

·         Uphold school policies around lateness, absences, homework, classroom behavior, etc.

·         Take daily attendance

·         Attend yearly COTESOL conference in Denver

·         Participate (lead sessions) in  semi-annual in-service training sessions at the school

·         New teachers – enroll in the peer mentor program at the school

 

Additional tasks (optional, compensated):

·         Curriculum review committee

·         Textbook review/adoption committee

·         Evaluate and update  student learning outcomes

·         Experienced teachers:  be a peer-mentor to new hires

·         Lead weekly staff meeting and share a new learning

·         Be a part of the student council advisory board; plan activities, liaise between students and staff, attend Friday activities

·         Lead the twice-weekly Writing Center

·         Develop curriculum  

 

Minimum Teaching Requirements:

·         Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field

·         2 years’ experience teaching adults

At least one of the following:

·         TEFL/TESL or equivalent certificate with at least 100 in-class hours including practicum

·         Master’s Degree in a relevant field

·         Six years of ESL experience

Preferred:

·         MA degree in TESOL (or related)

·         Experience living and teaching in another country

·         3+ years teaching adults academic English in an IEP (private or university-based)

·         Experience in an open enrollment program

·         Experience teaching using the communicative approach

·         Curriculum and course development

·         Experience with outcomes-based teaching and assessment

 

Salary:

·         Pay is commensurate with experience
