Program Philosophy | TESL program | Denver Colorado Minimize

CSE believes that effective teaching requires a familiarity with language acquisition and learning theories, a working knowledge of effective ESL teaching methodologies, cultural sensitivity, practical experience and the ability to spark motivation in the ESL/EFL student. Our goal is to provide each of our TESL/TEFL graduates with the opportunity to develop his/her own successful teaching style and the professional confidence and ability to present dynamic lessons in the classroom. We take pride in our teacher training program and aim to ensure that all our certificate holders represent us well, as competent and respected ESL/EFL professionals.

 Program Methodology and Content

The TESL/TEFL certificate program is a full-time, intensive course that requires dedicated effort and the desire to become a great ESL/EFL teacher.

 Instructional Hours

The course is designed to emphasize experiential and practical learning. We teach you using the methods and techniques you are learning.  During your instructional classes you will regularly give mini-lessons using these methods. Then you will apply the same methodologies in your own practice teaching.

Classes are conducted in a forum style that allows students to develop a personal teaching philosophy, share ideas and learn from their instructors and peers in a communicative and collaborative environment.  Participation is key to success in the program.

In this course you will learn and practice:

  • Teaching, learning, and language acquisition theories
  • Classroom management and lesson planning
  • Effective error correction and testing
  • How to teach grammar, vocabulary, speaking, pronunciation, listening, reading and writing
  • How to teach using, music, drama, and other creative, effective techniques
  • How to teach using Computer Aided Language Learning (CALL) tools and other technologies
  • How to make your classes learner-centered and your teaching engaging

You will also learn effective strategies for:

  • Dealing with cultural issues in your classroom
  • Becoming a self-aware teacher
  • Crafting targeted ESL/EFL resumes and job searches
  • Landing a job and evaluating offers

 Practicum

Your practice teaching will be guided and supervised by your trainers. You will apply what you are learning in your instructional classes directly in your own classes. Our guided curriculum gives you a structure to work from and allows you the flexibility to adapt your lessons to your teaching goals and to your students’ needs. Trainers will observe your classes and provide you with feedback that you can use to adapt your teaching and immediately apply to your lessons.

 Grading

You will be scored on a daily basis for attendance, participation, and homework and on quizzes, mini-presentations and mini-lessons covering each main instructional unit.

Your practice teaching will be scored on the basis of lesson preparation, delivery, and effective use of the techniques and methods presented in instruction.

An overall score of 80% is required to pass the program.

 Certificates

Upon successful completion of the course you will be awarded two certificates: one for the TESL/TEFL course and one for your practice teaching; the extended optional hours will be noted on this certificate.  Additionally, your certificate will indicate the key highlights of our program (including the length and that it is in-classroom).

Completion of all required instructional hours and practice teaching hours, and a passing score is required for both portions of the course to be granted either certificate.

 Our Trainers

CSE's TESL/TEFL trainers possess a Master's degree, or a Bachelor's degree plus TESL/TEFL certification or higher level credentials from an accredited and recognized institution.  Our trainers have a minimum of 7 years ESL/EFL teaching experience and extensive teacher training experience.

Our teacher trainers are not only highly qualified and experienced ESL/EFL instructors, they exemplify the methods and philosophies of our program in their own teaching. Our trainers are all actively teaching ESL/EFL and have been chosen for their outstanding teaching abilities and dedication to teacher training.

We believe in experiential learning and know that only instructors with extensive teaching and teacher training experience are adequately prepared to train our TESL/TEFL students to our high standards.*

*We do not use trainers that have little or no teacher training experience, regardless of educational background.  Nor do we use trainers who hold ONLINE certifications, as many of these courses are not accredited, and typically do not meet minimum standards as recommended by TESOL.

We welcome all inquiries.
